National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) and Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA).

Internet safety issues are introduced through interactive learning materials at this site for children and teenagers, with additional components for parents and teachers.

Stresses education and parent involvement (registration requires a guardian signature on a mail-in form), this portal is an obvious place to visit to ensure personal safety. Age-appropriate advice on sending e-mail, chatting online, and protecting personal information is included.

Bugs & Robots?  Yes!  Find out how scientists use the study of insects, such as ants and cockroaches, to uncover ideas on how to build robots and make them move. Video clips of prototypes and directions for creating a mechanical jitterbug are included.

ASTRONOMY

A free Web site featuring animated educational activities and interactive games that teach youngsters about space exploration, rockets, comets, math, and more.

BIOLOGY

This excellent bird guide lists birds either alphabetically or by taxonomy. Entries include descriptions, photos, sounds, range maps, scientific names, information on behavior & conservation status. A section on how to identify birds includes information on recognizing birds.  Find help choosing bird-watching gear, get suggestions on attracting birds and facts about bird conservation.

Deals with animals of the sea using colorful graphics and large fonts for easy reading. Dolphins, whales, fish, sharks, turtles and octopi are the main categories.  Great photos highlight each animal, and a sound recording is included for whales. The fish section includes facts on 12 types of ocean fish, with short, easy-to-read sections.

  • Oceanlink  Bamfield Marine Station, BC, Canada. Gr 4 Up

A great place to learn about marine life, oceans, and our responsibilities to them.  Along with information on fish and marine mammals, equal focus is given to less flashy marine life like algae, anemones, radiolarians, sea slugs and "creeps of the deep." Has many links to other excellent sites on all aspects of marine life. Has detailed glossary. The "OceanInfo" page is especially good. Don't miss the link on this page to underwater acoustics. Unbelievably cool.

Younger users will enjoy the colorful graphics and easy-to-read links.  Each animal is described with its habitat, and a few interesting characteristics & activities. "Fishy Fun" has educational games, especially "Sea Life Concentration", "Whales Crossword" and "Create an Ocean Scene." A high quality site for younger kids.

Search for photomicrographs (photographs taken through a microscope). Dennis Kunkel, award-winning photomicrographer, has made hundreds of his images available for classroom use. All users need to do is send in a form indicating how they'll use the pictures.  Information submitted is kept confidential. The image library is searchable by keyword or category. The Java scanning electron microscope (SEM) allows users to try out a virtual SEM with a student introduction. "Zoom In" lets users examine several bugs at different magnifications. "About Microscopy" provides brief descriptions of light microscopes, SEMs, and transmission electron microscopes.

  • Microbe Zoo The Comm Tech Lab and the Center for Microbial Ecology, Michigan State University.  Gr 3-8

Presents facts about microbes in a fun and kid-friendly manner. Begin with a picture of the "zoo;" and click on the part you want to explore. For a site outline or tips on exploring the page, choose "Information Booth." To learn about microbes found in rocks, soil, or compost piles, visit "Dirt Land."  "Animal Pavilion" highlights microbes that live in or on humans, cows, termites and dung.   In the "Snack Bar," users can find out which microbes are used to make foods like beer, bread, chocolate, and yogurt, while in "Space Adventure" they can learn about microbes in the air and in space.  "Water World," provides information on microbes that live in ponds and deep sea vents.

  • ASPCA's Animaland

This child-friendly site offers interactive information on careers, animal care, and general information about animals.

ENVIRONMENT

Junior gumshoes can learn to improve the environment through games such as "P.I. in the Sky" and by following the three R's: reduce, reuse, and recycle. Activities and lessons are divided into different age categories, all emphasizing the importance of keeping the Earth clean.

  • EcoKidsOnline

Offers information and activities for kids. In "Play & Learn", check out the animal coloring sheets, word games, and other activities. Here, too, are four interactive "Storybooks", suitable for upper elementary kids. Don't Miss: The "Eco-Calendars," which you can print and post in your library.

  • Environmental Kids Club

This site is huge, but well worth taking the time to explore. In the "Games", section, try your hand at "The Environauts Mission to Earth", (appropriate for upper elementary) and help save the planet Ergon from being buried under trash.

Get excited about energy conservation at this site full of interactive fun. Train as "hogbusters" by playing five different games or getting to know the hogs themselves. Don't Miss: The printable 12-page student workbook for grades 3-8.

Older kids and teens will enjoy taking a virtual excursion to Recycle City, where they'll learn how to save and recycle our resources. In the game "Dumptown," kids assume the role of city manager, in which they must inspire citizens to start recycling in order to clean up the mess, while taking into account the cost of various recycling programs. Challenging for all ages.

MATH

Fun and games with math

Designed for young students, this graphically appealing site uses short cartoons, games, and worksheets to introduce basic math skills. Very young children can go along with Addem the snake while he helps the ants order enough puddings or figure out if the houses have enough bathrooms for all of them. Addition and subtraction games include a dart board, "Toss the Toad," and "Snakes and Ladders." Worksheets offer appealing exercises.

Since 1994, Drexel University college math students have been answering math homework questions for their elementary and high school counterparts in this online forum. Students can submit questions to be answered, but it is recommended that they search the Web site first since most of the basic and not-so-basic problems have already been answered. Dr. Math will help students with homework questions, but won't give them answers.

Brain POP is a lively, interactive Web site where users can view short animated films, participate in an exercise, or do a related activity. Registered users, for free, can ask Tim and Moby homework questions or ask Cassie and Rita personal questions. Parental permission is required for registering users under 18. Students, registered or not, can view two of these movies per day. The extensive math area covers all the basics of elementary school math.

This selection of math games is part of a larger site called coolmath4kids. The gangly front page has links to addictive games like "Lemonade Stand" where players must estimate the amount of sugar, ice cubes, and lemons that will be needed on a given day. The main problem is that it is not always obvious how to play a game or how to find instructions. For students who don't mind blundering their way through the game, this is fine. There is a link to science games as well.
